Hey Space Placers! This illustration shows asteroid 2020 QG's trajectory bending during its close approach to Earth. The asteroid is the closest known nonimpacting asteroid ever detected. Credit: NASA/JPL-CaltechThe solar system is a busy place with countless amounts of debris flying all around. You may have seen the Perseid Meteor Shower which is Earth intercepting a cometary debris trail. We have 190 known impact craters formed by massive chunks of this debris smashing into our planet. And almost every single day we have some of these chunks flying by us.Well, we had a truck-sized chunk whiz by above the southern Indian Ocean on Sunday, Aug. 16 at 12:08 a.m. EDT (Saturday, Aug. 15 at 9:08 p.m. PDT).It set a record for the closest KNOWN flyby of Earth at 1,830 miles - WOW!What a fireball that would have made!Sky Guy in VA
