Statement on Allegations Against Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TORONTO [6 December 2018]
The Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics is concerned about the allegations of sexual misconduct that have been made against Dr Neil deGrasse Tyson. In March 2014, Dr Tyson was named the inaugural winner of the Dunlap Prize, an international award recognising an individual whose achievements resonate with the Dunlap Institute’s goals for excellence in astronomy and astrophysics.
We look forward to the outcomes of the investigations that Dr Tyson’s employers are now conducting into these matters. We are currently not in a position to comment on the validity of the specific allegations, but make the unequivocal statement that the alleged behaviour runs completely counter to our values.
The Dunlap Institute has an unwavering commitment to excellence, equity and respect. We strive toward research, teaching and learning that are professional and inclusive, and we insist on a safe and supportive workplace free from harassment, violence, or other harmful behaviour. Sexual harassment and sexual assault are always unacceptable, and have a destructive effect on the lives and careers of the people who experience it.
