SAAO celebrates National Science Week

Once again the SAAO prepares to celebrate the National Science Week along with our colleagues from all across the country. The National Science Week is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and is probably the largest event in the science promotion arena in this country. The SAAO's participation always stretches across two provinces as a minimum, the Western Cape (where our head offices are based) and the Northern Cape (where the research telescope facilities, including SALT, are based).Funded once again by grants from the DST, the SAAO will this year host learners, educators and the public at both its facilities (in Cape Town and Sutherland respectively). The programme at each venue will consist of workshops, tours, science shows and stargazing - an astronomy theme for starry eyed learners. The public can enjoy the stars during the SAAO open night on 10th May in Cape Town as well as during the AstroNight on the 14th May in Sutherland. Learners from all over the Northern Cape will once again make long journeys to the impressive facilities in Sutherland. Learners from the Western Cape will be treated to a host of activities co-ordinated by the vibrant Sivuyile Manxoyi, our education officer in Cape Town, who will also be hosting an educator workshop on the 17th May. National Science Week for the Western Cape will kick off at a launch in Cape Town on Friday 9th May and in the Northern Cape in Kimberley on Monday 12th May.
