I've been sidelined by a bout with the flu the past week, and thus am only now getting around to writing about "Mysteries of the Cosmos," an evening panel discussion held at Caltech a week ago, hosted by Discover magazine,...I've been sidelined by a bout with the flu the past week, and thus am only now getting around to writing about "Mysteries of the Cosmos," an evening panel discussion held at Caltech a week ago, hosted by Discover magazine, the National Science Foundation and the Thirty Meter Telescope. Caltech students and science buffs of all ages alike crowded into the auditorium to hear about black holes, dark energy, extrasolar planets, the possibility of extraterrestrial life, and celestial bodies at the outer edge of the solar system.No panel can succeed without a good moderator, and Bad Astronomer Phil Plait brought his trademark sharp focus and good humor to bear on the task, deftly switching the focus evenly among the four featured scientists throughout the evening: UCLA's Andrea Ghez, UC-Berkeley's Saul Permutter, Debra Fischer of San Francisco State University, and Caltech's Michael Brown.
