Dr. Massimo Stiavelli is an astrophysicist and the project scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope at the Space Telescope Science Institute. His main science interest is the formation and evolution of galaxies from both a theoretical and an observational standpoint. He has also worked on other topics, ranging from the detection of small asteroids in our solar system to cosmology. Stiavelli has published 100 papers and three books.Stiavelli was born in Italy, where he obtained a PhD in Physics at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. He was a postdoctoral research associate at Rutgers University, a fellow at the European Southern Observatory and held a research position at the Scuola Normale Superiore. In 1995, he was hired by the European Space Agency to work on Hubble at the Space Telescope Science Institute. In 2000, he joined the NASA-funded staff at the Institute.
