We were in the midst of moving our household over the weekend, and thereby missed the official "Earth Hour," wherein cities around the world voluntarily turned off the lights to raise awareness of climate change and the energy crisis. As...We were in the midst of moving our household over the weekend, and thereby missed the official "Earth Hour," wherein cities around the world voluntarily turned off the lights to raise awareness of climate change and the energy crisis. As many have pointed out -- some more snidely than others -- the gesture is unlikely to do much to save the planet in the long run. We'd have to turn out all the lights for more than just one hour to do that.But it does drive home just how dependent we've become on electricity to illuminate our nights -- which is a Very Good Thing for the most part. It's just that something has been lost in the process: the ability to marvel at the night sky. How many of us ever bother anymore to gaze upwards when we're out at night?
