Q: What do you get when you combine astronomy, the internet and a ton of misleading gibberish? A: A cyber-legend that refuses to budge...

A cyber-legend is like an urban legend, only more annoying. After all, the Internet is big and information travels fast, so misinformation travels at the same rate as information, sometimes faster. This is why you'll find a plethora of conspiracy, supernatural, New Age and scaremongering websites all vying for the click of your mouse button if you do a search for "aliens," "2012," or "Mayans."

So, check your sources; if you're looking at information on a Discovery News site, you can be 100% rest-assured that the information is correct (at least at the time when it went to print) and the writer is a ridiculously qualified journalist, scientist or editor. On the other hand, if you're looking at a site that consists of a single page of black background and capitalized yellow type, written by a person called "TheREAPER2012," you might want to look elsewhere for a reliable source of information.
