NASA SDO - Riding on a Sounding Rocket (by LittleSDOHMI)
On June 23, 2012 team EVE (EVE is one of the three instruments on board of SDO) is planning on launching its 3rd EVE under flight calibration sounding rocket. Launch is scheduled at 13:00 MDT (window 13:00 - 13:30 MDT) (3:00pm EDT) from the White Sands Missile Range. Launch time is near local noon to minimize the atmospheric absorption of the solar EUV radiation during the rocket observations. As part of the planned SDO EVE program, sounding rockets are flown regularly to provide underflight calibrations in order to more accurately track instrument degradation trends. The video here was from March 23, 2011; two on-board cameras followed a sounding rocket on its journey from Earth to space and back again. The rocket was launched to measure solar energy output and calibrate the EVE instrument on the Solar Dynamics Observatory. Credit: NASA
