In this brief video taken following Saturday's launch, the one ton Mars lander Curiosity is gently sent on a trajectory to Mars.
Equipped with a suite of science instruments to sample the environment for clues to ancient life, the rover will build on the discover of water ice on planet. It will also execute a challenging landing, which will pioneer technologies that may prove useful in future crewed missions.
Watch this video for an animated look at key events in the rover's life, which begins with the separation shown above, as well as the gripping descent and landing on the surface.
Arrival is slated for next August.
